The Phone Checklist to Run Before Every Trip

Twelve checks, fifteen minutes, and you board with your connection, your data and the phone itself locked down. Tick as you go.

A travel phone checklist takes fifteen minutes. Skipping it can cost you the whole trip. One traveller described having her phone lifted in a Paris shop: she walked back to her rental from memory, no map, no messages, no tickets, then spent the next morning buying a replacement instead of exploring. In London, 71,391 phones were reported stolen in 2025; that is one every six minutes. And theft is only half the problem: roaming bills, dead batteries and missed backups ruin plenty of arrivals too.

Here is the checklist we run ourselves: three blocks, twelve boxes, in order.

!

Everything that matters gets set up before you leave

Help forums are full of messages typed on a friend's phone: "how do I block my stolen phone?". After the theft you have no access to settings, codes or backups. This checklist exists so you never have to type that message.

Boxes 1 to 3Connection: plan, eSIM and offline

First job: kill the surprise bill and the map that will not load on arrival. Three boxes take care of roaming charges before they exist.

Boxes 4 to 8Security: backup and anti-theft

This is the block other checklists skip, and it is the one that saves your trip when things go wrong.

Boxes 9 to 12Departure day

The last four boxes get ticked while you pack. This is also where the physical side gets settled: an attachment that reduces the risk of drops and snatch theft.

Frequently asked questionsPrepping your phone: what people ask

How do I prepare my phone for international travel?

Four essentials: check your plan and roaming, install an eSIM or plan for a local SIM, run a full backup, then turn on Find My and your system's theft protection. The rest of the checklist sharpens those four pillars.

How do I avoid roaming charges abroad?

Before departure: billing cap on, mobile data and roaming off if your destination is not covered, local eSIM installed for data. Calls then run over Wi-Fi, WhatsApp or FaceTime without touching your plan.

eSIM or local SIM card: which should I choose?

An eSIM installs before you leave and works the moment you land, with your usual number still active. A local SIM is often cheaper per gigabyte but means finding a kiosk, queuing and sometimes showing ID. For a trip of a few weeks or less, the eSIM almost always wins.

How do I back up my phone before a trip?

Plug the phone in, connect to Wi-Fi and start the iCloud or Google backup the night before; it finishes while you sleep. In the morning, check the date of the last successful backup before you leave the house.

What should I do if my phone still gets stolen abroad?

Mark the device as lost from another device, suspend the line, call your banks, then file a police report with the IMEI you saved at box 7. The minute-by-minute plan is in our first-5-minutes guide.

Keep your phone within reach

The checklist takes one evening; the calm lasts the whole trip. Your connection handles the arrival, your backup protects the memories, the bracelet keeps the phone on your wrist.
