Back Up Your Phone Before It's Lost or Stolen
Photos, contacts, messages, codes: back it all up in 5 minutes — so you never lose a thing, even if the device vanishes.
Your phone can be replaced. Your photos can't. The day a device is stolen, dropped in water or left in a cab, it's not the few hundred dollars of hardware that hurt most — it's the years of memories, contacts and documents that vanish with it.
Yet barely a third of people back up their phone regularly, and over 70% have already lost data at least once. The good news: setting everything up takes five minutes, it's free or almost, and you only do it once. Here's the complete guide to backing up your phone — and never losing anything again.
You can't back up a phone you no longer have
A backup only helps if it exists BEFORE the incident. After a theft or a drop, it's already too late. The right time to turn on automatic backup is now — not the night your phone disappears.
The action planBack up your phone in 7 steps
iPhone: turn on iCloud Backup
Go to Settings → [your name] → iCloud → iCloud Backup, then turn it on. Plugged in and on Wi-Fi, your iPhone backs itself up every night. The first 5 GB are free; upgrade to iCloud+ (50 GB for a few dollars) if your backup is too large.
Android: turn on Google Backup
Open the Google One app → Set up data backup, or Settings → Google → Backup. Your contacts, texts, apps and settings are copied continuously to your Google account, ready to restore on any device.
Back up photos and videos first
It's what people miss most. Turn on iCloud Photos, or Google Photos Backup (Back up & sync). Pro tip: a second copy on another service — Google Photos in addition to iCloud — keeps you safe even if one account is compromised.
Don't forget contacts, messages and 2FA codes
Sync your contacts to iCloud or Google. Remember your password manager and your authentication codes too: keep the backup codes for your 2FA apps off the phone, or you risk being locked out of your accounts after a loss.
Protect the device, not just the files
A backup protects your files — but not the phone itself, nor your privacy if it falls into the wrong hands. The LOCKÜP™ bracelet physically attaches your device to your wrist with a patented magnetic lock rated at +100 lb of force. The result: it can't be snatched or dropped. The best data to back up is the kind you never lose.

Make sure the backup actually works
A backup you never check isn't a backup. Verify the date of the last copy — iPhone: Settings → [your name] → iCloud → iCloud Backup; Android: Google One app → Storage tab. Make sure it's recent and truly automatic.
Note your IMEI and prepare your plan
Dial *#06# to display your IMEI and write it down elsewhere: it's used to block the device. With a recent backup and Find My turned on, restoring a new phone takes minutes — instead of losing everything again. Keep our first 5 minutes plan handy too.
Backup vs preventionA backup doesn't replace protection
Backing up is the essential Plan B: if the worst happens, you get your digital life back. But a backup doesn't prevent theft, doesn't recover the device and doesn't protect the screen from a drop. For that, you need to prevent the loss itself.

Frequently asked questionsPhone backup: your questions
How often should I back up my phone?
Ideally automatically, every day. iCloud and Google handle it on their own overnight, when the phone is on Wi-Fi and charging. Once backup is on, there's nothing left to do.
Is iCloud Backup free?
The first 5 GB are free. Beyond that, iCloud+ (50 GB) costs a few dollars a month. Google gives you 15 GB free, shared across Gmail, Drive and Photos.
What happens to my data if my phone is stolen?
If everything was backed up, you restore it all on a new device in minutes. Also remember to erase the old one remotely via “Find My” to protect your personal information.
Does a backup protect against theft?
No. It protects your files, not the device. To prevent snatch theft or a drop, you need to physically attach the phone — for example with a LOCKÜP™ bracelet.
How do I know if my last backup is recent?
On iPhone: Settings → [your name] → iCloud → iCloud Backup. On Android: Google One app → Storage tab. The date of the last backup is shown there.
