Phone Theft While Cycling, Scootering or Running

On a bike, an e-scooter or mid-run, your phone is more exposed than ever: propped on a handlebar mount, held in your hand to track your pace, or simply pulled out at a red light. Those are exactly the moments thieves strike.

Two realities collide in 2026. On one side, the thieves themselves are rolling: they ride e-bikes or scooters, hop onto the sidewalk, appear from behind and snatch the phone in one hand before vanishing into traffic. On the other, you're riding or running with your phone in plain sight — on the handlebar or in your palm — and you become an easy moving target.

!

The “scooter” scenario is spreading

A thief rolls by slowly, often up on the sidewalk, spots a phone held or mounted, snatches it in passing and speeds off. In London, police recorded nearly 80,000 thefts of this kind in 2024. An untethered device changes hands in under two seconds.

The action plan8 habits to ride and run without getting robbed

1

Never ride — or run — with the phone in your hand

A device held in your palm is target #1: it's snatched with a single motion as a bike or scooter passes. If you need to follow a route or your pace, mount the phone or tether it to your wrist rather than keeping it in hand.

2

Handlebar mount: handy, but secure it

A phone on the handlebar is visible from afar and stacks two risks: snatching at a stop and falling onto the road at the first pothole. Choose a locking mount and add a tether (lanyard or cord) linked to the bike or to you: even if dislodged, the device won't fall or get taken.

3

At red lights and intersections, put it away

The stop at a light is a scooter thief's favourite moment: you're still, focused, phone in hand or on the mount. Use stops to tuck the device into a closed pocket, not to check your messages.

4

Runners: the wrist or an armband, never a clenched hand

Running with the phone squeezed in your hand tires your arm… and offers it to anyone passing on a bike. A snug armband or, better, a wrist tether keeps the device handy for your music and training data without making it snatchable.

5

Keep your distance from the road

Thieves ride up onto the sidewalk or hug the curb to strike. On a bike lane or sidewalk, stay on the side away from traffic when you can, and stay aware of what's coming up behind you: most snatches come from behind.

6

Physically tether your phone

It's the only method that actually stops a snatch in motion. The LOCKÜP™ bracelet links your phone to your wrist with a patented magnetic lock rated at +100 lb of force. On the handlebar, mid-run or at a stop, the device stays attached to you — impossible to grab in one motion, impossible to lose on the road.

Turn on “Find My” and Stolen Device Protection

Before you head out: “Find My iPhone” or “Find My Device” (Android) active, offline network included, to locate the device even when off. On iPhone, enable Stolen Device Protection; on Android, Theft Detection and remote lock.

8

Note your IMEI, back up, prepare your plan

Dial *#06# to display your IMEI and note it elsewhere: it's used to block the device. Turn on automatic backup (iCloud or Google) and hide message previews on the lock screen to protect your 2FA codes. If it's stolen: mark as lost, lock remotely, suspend the line, alert your bank, report to police.

Settings vs tetherWhy apps aren't enough once you're moving

“Find My”, remote lock and Stolen Device Protection are essential — but they kick in after the theft. In motion, the second counts: the only way to stop the snatch itself is for the phone to be physically attached to you or the bike.

Situation Main risk What actually protects
Phone in hand (running, walking) Snatched in passing Wrist tether
On a handlebar mount Snatch + fall onto road Locking mount + cord
Pulled out at a red light Scooter thief at the stop Put it away or tether it
In an open pocket Falling + pickpocket Closed pocket + tether

Software settings remain essential for recovering the device and protecting your data. Combine them with a physical tether to also cover the act of theft itself.

Frequently asked questionsPhone theft on the move: your questions

How do I stop my phone being snatched while cycling or scootering?

Don't hold it in your hand while riding, put it away at stops and, above all, tether it physically — to your wrist with a LOCKÜP™ bracelet or by a cord linked to the bike. A tethered device can't be taken in one motion.

Are handlebar mounts risky?

They expose the phone to view and to theft at a standstill, plus falls on impact. Use a locking mount and add a safety tether: even if dislodged, the device stays held.

How can I run safely with my phone?

Avoid clenching it in your hand. A snug armband or a wrist tether keeps the device handy for music and training tracking without making it snatchable.

Does the LOCKÜP™ bracelet get in the way during exercise?

No: it's worn on the wrist, the Dyneema® cord is light and retractable, and the magnetic lock releases in one motion when you need it. It fits any iPhone or Android with a case.

My phone was stolen while I was riding — what do I do first?

Mark it as lost (Find My), lock it remotely, call your carrier to suspend the line and block the IMEI, alert your bank, then report the theft to police with the IMEI.

The best anti-theft is the one that can't be snatched.

Set up your settings, then tether your phone. The LOCKÜP™ bracelet installs in seconds and follows you cycling, scootering and running.
