How to protect your phone from theft
Snatch theft, pickpockets, drops: 9 proven methods to keep your phone — and your data — safe.
Your phone is worth far more than its price tag. Photos, emails, banking apps, passwords, authentication codes: your entire digital life fits in the palm of your hand. And in 2026, that hand is exactly what thieves are after.
Snatch theft — someone who appears, grabs the phone right out of your hand and vanishes on a bike or scooter — is now the majority of phone thefts in major cities. The good news: a few simple habits dramatically cut the risk, and most are free.
Snatch theft is surging
Nearly 7 in 10 phone thefts are snatch-and-grab: the victim is holding their device when a thief grabs it and flees in seconds. A phone held in hand and not tethered is the ideal target.
The action planThe 9 methods to protect your phone
Biometric lock + 6-digit PIN
Turn on Face ID or fingerprint, plus a PIN of at least 6 digits — avoid 0000, 1234 or your birthday. Set auto-lock to 30 seconds.
Enable Stolen Device Protection
On iPhone (iOS 17.3+), this requires Face ID or Touch ID — with no passcode fallback — for sensitive actions, and adds a one-hour delay before your Apple password can be changed. On Android, enable Theft Detection and remote lock.
Turn on Find My BEFORE it happens
Find My iPhone (iCloud) or Find My Device (Android) must be active right now. Also enable the offline network: it can locate a device even when it's off or disconnected.
Stay discreet in high-risk spots
Avoid pulling out your phone near transit stops, at red lights, or at the curb. Don't leave it on a café table. Watch for distractions: someone asking the time, bumping you, or showing you a map.
Physically tether your phone
This is the only method that truly prevents snatching. A security bracelet like the LOCKÜP™ links your phone to your wrist with a patented magnetic lock rated at 100+ lb of pull force. Even if it's grabbed, the device stays attached to you — not the thief.

Lock down your payments and accounts
Hide message previews on the lock screen — 2FA codes show up there. Require authentication for Apple Pay and Google Pay, and add an app lock to your banking apps.
Save your IMEI and back up your data
Dial *#06# to display your IMEI number, then store it somewhere else: it's used to block the device. Turn on automatic backup (iCloud or Google) so you never lose your memories.
Learn to spot theft techniques
Snatching by bike or scooter, table grabs on patios, a hand over the shoulder on the subway. Hold your phone with both hands, away from the road — or better yet, tether it.
Prepare your first 5 minutes plan
Know in advance what to do: mark as lost, lock remotely, call your carrier to suspend the line, block the IMEI, alert your bank and file a police report.
Software vs physicalWhy settings alone aren't enough
Software protections are essential… but they kick in after the theft: they help you locate, lock or wipe the device. None of them stop the act itself. Only a physical tether stops snatching before it succeeds.

FAQPhone theft: your questions
What should I do immediately if my phone is stolen?
Mark it as lost (Find My), lock it remotely, call your carrier to suspend the line and block the IMEI, change your important passwords, alert your bank, then file a police report with your IMEI.
Can a thief unlock my phone?
With a strong passcode, biometrics and Stolen Device Protection, it's very hard. Activation Lock also makes the device nearly unsellable. Without these settings, an unlocked phone is emptied in minutes.
How do I avoid snatch theft?
Stay discreet, keep the phone away from the road, and above all tether it physically to your wrist or crossbody — for example with a LOCKÜP™ bracelet — so it simply can't be grabbed.
Is the LOCKÜP™ bracelet compatible with my phone?
Yes: with any iPhone or Android in a case. An adhesive universal card is included to slip under the case if needed.
Can you find a phone that's turned off?
Yes, if Find My and the offline network were enabled before the theft: the device can be detected via Bluetooth by nearby devices, even offline.
The best anti-theft is the one that can't be snatched.
Set your settings, then secure your phone. The LOCKÜP™ bracelet installs in seconds and goes everywhere with you.
